The devastating floods in Bosnia and Herzegovina – and throughout the Balkans – are “the worst thing” the country has faced since its deadly civil war two decade ago, President Bakir Izetbegović told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on Monday. The cost of the damage will be measure in billions of euros, he told Amanpour. “Hundreds of square kilometers [are] under water; in some parts, in some cities, in some villages in Northern Bosnia there is two or three meters of water,” he said. “So the rivers are out and now it looks like lakes.” The flooding has already killed at least two dozen people in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Massive swaths of Croatia are also submerged. Along with the damage and death caused by floods, many are also concerned about the deadly minefields left in place from the war. “In this moment, there is still water, and still we cannot exactly say what happened with minefields,” President Izetbegović said. “But for sure they will be displaced. Also the warning marks are removed.”

World’s ‘poorest’ president: ‘I do not need much to live’

Jose Mujica is often referred to as the world’s “poorest” president. “I'm not a poor president,” he told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour through an interpreter on Monday. “Poor are the people who need a lot – Seneca said that. I am an austere president.” He donates 97% of his salary, drives a 1987 Volkwagen Beetle – the original “peoples’ car” – and sells flowers with his wife at their home. Mujica, a former Marxist guerrilla, lives in the same modest Montevideo house he always has, forgoing the presidential palace. “I do not need much to live. I live in the same way I used to live when I wasn’t a president and in the same neighborhood, in my same house, and in the same way. And I am a republican” – small ‘r.’ “I live like the majority in my country lives. It was a majority who voted for me. And that's why I identify with them. Morally, I do not have the right to live like a minority in my country.” “A lot of people like a lot of money. They shouldn't go into politics. That's my way of seeing it. I am not improvising. I don't do marketing. This is my philosophy.” President Mujica met with U.S. President Barack Obama at the White House Monday. What is it like for a former Marxist guerrilla to enter the White House, that most potent of Western’s symbols? “I cannot deny reality,” he told Amanpour. “I don't know whether I like this planet or not, but I have to accept it.”

In an interview with CNN's Christiane Amanpour on Tuesday, Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves called for a "physical presence on the ground" in the region as a deterrence against Russia. Estonia, a former Soviet republic that shares a border with Russia, is now a member of NATO. Its leadership has been outspoken expressing concern about Russia's incursion into Ukraine. "We need more exercises," President Ilves said. "We think that the decision to increase the number of planes providing air policing in the region is a very good one." "But given the uncertainty that we see to the east and the kinds of actions that we’ve seen in the east, we need to make sure that others understand that this is not something to play around with." Amanpour asked President Ilves what he thought Russian President Vladimir Putin's "goal" was. "We are in new territory right now. The rules have been broken."
